Nina Wadia has announced that, after five years as the indomitable Zainab Masood, she plans to leave EastEnders.
“Playing Zainab has been a gift and a privilege. I’ll always be hugely proud of the talented friends I’ve worked with and I’m so grateful for the special bond with our audience who watch, care and talk to us every day – we’re a family of millions.
Letting go of something you love is never easy but the time has come to move on and every ending brings a new beginning. Here’s to future loves.” Nina added.
Say hello to Ayesha Rana, who will be turning up on the Masoods’ doorstep this December.
Sweet and studious, but rather shy, Ayesha has lived a sheltered life. Since the tragic death of her beloved father, she has been left alone with a distant mother and uncaring brothers.
Ayesha will be played by Shivani Ghai, who has previously appeared in Bride and Prejudice, House of Saddam (pictured), Five Days II and Clean Skin.
On her new role, Shivani says “I’ve been watching EastEnders for years and am excited to be joining such an iconic show.”
EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt who plays Ian Beale has revealed that he is a fan of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
“Meeting @iamsrk later, wonder if he fancies playing in a Charity Football Match,” said Woodyatt on twitter – who is organising a series of celebrity matches
EastEnders topped the soap ratings on Christmas & Boxing Day as the Yusef Khan storyline reached a dramatic climax, overnight figures show.
Christmas Day saw Eastenders at its peak, it had 10.2 million viewers while ITV’s Coronation Street got 9.9 million.
Boxing day EastEnders pulled in 9.94m at 9pm on BBC One as vengeful Yusef set fire to the B&B with explosive consequences. BBC Three’s repeat screening secured 703k at 10.30pm.
It’s an all-blazing fire tonight in Eastenders as the B&B goes up in flames for a sizzling 2011 finale.
Masood Ahmed, played by Nitin Ganatra, does all he can to save his ex-wife Zainab (Nina Wadia) from the influence of the evil Yusef Khan- played by Ace Bhatti- but sadly his efforts are met with a terrifying revenge from the evil doctor.
It’s still anyone’s guess who bites the dust, but it certainly looks as though this will be the last Christmas at least one EastEnder sees.
Nina Wadia spoke about her domestic violence storyline in Eastenders and hopes it will have a positive impact .
Wadia today told BBC News: “I think the idea behind showing a strong woman like Zainab changing like this is to show that it can happen to even the strongest of women. They can change and they can be manipulated – especially if they’re isolated from their friends and family. The manipulator can take advantage, so it’s to prove that it can even happen to people like her.”
“To be honest, if even one woman rings that Action Line at the end of the show and there’s some difference made to her life, I’ll feel like we’ve done our job,” she continued. “It is a serious issue and I’m glad it’s being highlighted.
“I hope that it wakes anyone up – not just women, I know that there are abused men out there as well. So if it gives anyone the strength to leave a relationship like that, we’ll have done our job.”

Eastenders star Preeya Kalidas has warned that Walford schemer Yusef Khan should be wary of playing his games with her character Amira Masood.
Yusef (Ace Bhatti) sets out to destroy Amira’s credibility next week, manipulating Christian Clarke into thinking that she is lying about baby Yasmin being Syed’s daughter.
Christian (John Partridge) is convinced by Yusef’s spiteful suggestions and later approaches him for a DNA test to uncover the truth, keen to ensure that his fiancé isn’t being strung along.
“Amira would be devastated if she found out what Yusef was doing behind her back, because it’s another barrier to her being with Syed,” Kalidas told Inside Soap.
“Her reputation is already in tatters and she’s an outcast in her community. And now Yusef is suggesting she was unfaithful. Everything’s going wrong for her again.”
However, she continued: “I’m sure Yusef thinks he’s being really clever, but he doesn’t know who he’s messing with. Amira might just start some scheming of her own.
“She may have had a really tough time recently, but she’s also a fighter and she’s pretty defiant. When she really wants something, she’ll go for it!”
